Ethiopian National parks

There are almost 20 national parks found in Ethiopia in 4 directions of the country with different geographical backgrounds and climates, Ethiopia is one of the top world country who have many National parks those are:- Abijatta - Shalla National park, Awash National park, Bale Mountain National park, Borena Saynt National Park, Gambela National park, Kafta Sheraro National park, Mago National park, Maze National park, NechSar National park, Omo National park, Semien Mountain National park and Yangudi Russa National park, also Ethiopia recorded 6 wild life sanctuaries:- Didessa Wildlife sanctuary, Babile Wildlife sanctuary, Kuni-Muktar Wildlife sanctuary, Senkelle Wildlife sanctuary, Stephanie Wildlife sanctuary and Yabello Wildlife sanctuary, those national parks and wildlife sanctuaries are the home for 279 mammal species among those 31 are endemic to Ethiopia and endangered species there are 924 birds species recorded in Ethiopia among those 23 are endemic to Ethiopia only recorded in Ethiopia.

Semien mountain national park

This park is one of the world magnificent park which is found in the northern part of Ethiopia , it’s one of the world heritage , UNESCO gives its recognition by its best land escapes, wildlife sanctuary and birdlife sanctuary, there are many species of wild life including the endemics of Ethiopian wolfs, Walia ibex and gelada Baboon, the parks landscape is very dramatic when its combine with the natural beauty of the area its became very attractive place, the tallest Ethiopian mountain is found in this park which is 4,500 meters above sea level, this park is the home of 50 bird species including the endemics that are only found in Ethiopia.

BALE Mountains National park

The Bale mountains national park is found in the south east of Ethiopia, there are mountains include the 4377 meter of Tulu Dimtu the second highest mountain in Ethiopia & the 4307meters of mount Batu those mountains is found in the well known Bale mountains national park, this park is the home of many wild life and bird life, the lower reaches covered with extensive virgin woodlands, pristine mountain streams and alpine climate, the Bale Mountains remain an untouched and beautiful world.

The establishment of the 2,400- square- kilometers of Bale Mountains National park was crucial to the survival of the mountain Nyala, Minilik’s bushbuck and simian red fox, this fox is one of the most colorful members of dog family and more abundant, there is no anywhere else in Ethiopia. All three endemic animals thrive in this environment, while the Nyala’s particular can be seen in large number, the park harbors over 320 bird species including half of Ethiopia’s endemic birds the streams of the park which become important rivers further downstream are well stocked with rainbow and brown trout, this park is very impressive for trekking tour.

AWASH National park

This park is the oldest and most developed wild life reservation in Ethiopia, you can see the 1,800-meters high Fentalle volcano, extensive mineral hot-springs and extraordinary volcanic formation, this natural treasure is bordered to the south by the Awash River and found 225 kilometers east of Addis Ababa, this makes the park very accessible for visitors. This park is the home of East African plains animals such as Oryx, bat-eared fox, caracal, aardvark, Colobus, green monkeys, Anubis, Hamadryads baboons, klipspringer, leopard, bush-buck, hippopotamus, Soemmering’s gazelle, cheetah, kudu… , and 450 species of birds are thrive in the park.

OMO Valley national Parks

This area is Ethiopia’s largest nature sanctuary, the Omo River is one of African locations for white-water rafting to the Lake Turkana, this river is riches by fish and the huge shapes of crocodile and hippo, The lower Omo valley is one of the UNESCO world heritage sites, there are many hominid fossils discoveries in the area, there are two national parks in Omo valley:-

Omo National park:- The Omo national park found in the south west of Ethiopia it’s one of the richest park for big game, it covers an area of 4,068 km2 this makes the park the largest park in Ethiopia , you can find both bird life and wild life including Buffalo, Elephant, Giraffe, lion, African leopards, hartebeest, cheetah and others, it is an untouched endless distant horizons.

MAGO National park:- it has been established on the eastern bank of the Omo river its 780km from the capital, it covers an area of 2220 km2, you can find a large varieties of both wild life and bird life, also the best known Mursi tribes live in the park territory the women who are well known by piercing their lower lips and inserting a clay disc. Both Omo and Mago national parks share a boundary and they offer the amazing African wild life big game.

NECH SAR National Park

This park is found in 530 km to southern of the capital it’s 514km2 the Arbaminch town is neighbor to this park ,15% of the park consists of lakes including Lake Abaya in the north and lake Chamo in the south the forest between the two lakes by the kulf mountain is dominant by Ficus sycamores which can grow up 30 meter tall tree, this park is a place where you can watch vast wild animals also birds including water birds this area is known by crocodile Market where you can found a lot of crocodiles and hippo, and other water animals.

Gambela Ntional Park

This park is found in the western part of Ethiopia , it’s about 850 km from the capital Addis Ababa, the Baro river cross this park, the river is one of the largest river in Ethiopia, in this park you can find the unique animals such as:-Buffalo, Elephant, Giraffe, Masai lion , African leopards , lelwel hartebeest, olive baboon and so much more also about 150 bird species are found in Gambela national park, most of the park is grass land those grass grows up to 3 meters height and the other part of the park is forest.

Abijatta-shalla National park

This park is found in southern part of Ethiopia it’s about 200 km from Addis Ababa its closer from the capital Addis Ababa this makes the park the most visiting national park in Ethiopia , this park found in the rift valley zone of Ethiopia this rift valley creates two big major lakes called Abijata and Shalla lakes the name of the park derived from this lakes, this lakes are separated by the ‘Fike’ mountain its 2070m above sea level , this park is well known by its bird life sanctuary, there are 300 bird species found in the park, this birds include water birds, it’s easy to watch thousand of flamingos on the lake shore of Chitu and on the open grass land its quit easy to see many ostriches, most of the park is grass land area but there are acacia forests also there are hot springs formed by the unstable volcanic activity of the area.

Wildlife Sanctuaries

Bablile Elephant sanctuary

The Bablile Elephant sanctuary was established in 1970G.C, it is found in east Hararghe zone of Ethiopia, it lies on 6,982 square kilometers, you can watch the native African Elephant in the sanctuary also other mammals.

Senkelle Hartebeest sanctuary

The Senkelle Hartebeest wildlife sanctuary is established to protect the endangered species of the Swayne’s hartebeest, it is found 340 kilometers south of Addis Ababa and covers an area of 54Km2, you can find also other mammals in the sanctuary and 91 species of birds in the scenic sanctuary.

Yabello wild life sanctuary

It is found 565 km south of Addis Ababa in Borena zone, the sanctuary consists of Acacia savannah, wooden land & forests, it is a home for 210 species of birds including Ostrich and mammals such as, swaynes Hartebeest, Zebra, Gerenuk, gazelle, Dik-Dik and others.
